How Can Our Sins Be Washed Away?

January 8, 2010 by Rev

How come that the blood of Jesus washes as white as snow? Blood is thick, how can it wash stains away, as it is very much red? I am a child of God, but do not know about the above.

Thank you for your question. Having our sins “washed away” is an expression that is used in the Bible. God said, “Come now and let us reason together”, says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” – Isaiah 1:18. Sins are like “stains” in our lives and being washed “white as snow” is an excellent description of how God forgives and cleanses us of our sins. Our sins are dark and evil, but can be made white as snow. The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” – I John 1:9. For this to happen we must ask Jesus Christ to forgive our sins. We must make it personal. He died on the cross, our part is to ask Him for forgiveness.

Here’s another way of explaining it. It’s as if we were given a white garment at birth and all through our life it gets dirtier and dirtier, until it becomes an awful stain. What do you think we’d look like standing before God? The Bible says, “All of us have become like one who is unclean and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” – Isaiah 64:6. All our human efforts can not wash the stains away. Trying to be a good person or going to church will not wash it away. Instead, our sins can only be washed away by the blood of Jesus so that we can stand clean before God.
