What does Hebrews 6:4-6 mean? Does it mean if you were saved and had spiritual gifts, then backslide or sinned and told the Lord you wouldn’t do again and did it? Have you lost your salvation and it is impossible to get it back? That’s quite discouraging, because I’ve repeated sins after I told God I wouldn’t do again. What chance do we have?
Hebrews 6:4-6 says; “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.”
This passage of scripture refers to people who have given their lives to Christ, but choose to return to a sinful lifestyle. If this happens it’s impossible to renew them again to repentance since they have already made their choice. Repentance is the only way to be saved and this means turning from a sinful lifestyle. This doesn’t mean as Christians that we will live a sinless life. The Bible says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” – I John 1:8. Instead, we are to strive for holiness. A true believer who sins will have godly sorrow for their sin and will confess it to their Heavenly Father and do everything possible not to do it again. So no, you cannot lose your salvation because you failed to live a perfect Christian life.
