What Does it Mean to Accept Christ?

January 8, 2010 by Rev

Dear Rev. What exactly does it mean to “accept Christ”? Just asking? feeling? words? What about losing the gift of salvation? Is that a true conscience decision? Could it happen and we not know it? Thinking we are saved and God just decided we are too much of a sinner? Not following the rules? Or is it something we know we are walking away from?

Thank you for your questions. I will explain first what “accepting Christ” means. Jesus died on the cross so that we could be forgiven for our sins. However, you must make it personal and ask Christ to forgive you. After that, ou live your life to please Him because of what He’s done for you. That’s what it means to “accept Christ”. You accept Him as your Savior from sin and Friend for life. Also, accepting Christ is not about feelings or specific words, but a conscience decision.

I’m glad you asked this question about “losing” your salvation because there’s a lot of confusion about this.  No one can “lose” their salvation in the sense that it could happen and we not know about it. However, you can walk away from it and so it would have to be a conscience decision. – Rev.

Thank you, but how does God save those who can not comprehend this? Retarded? Young? They can’t really believe can they?

That’s a great question! God made salvation easy enough for a child to understand. It’s as easy as hearing the story of how Jesus died on the cross and rose again. If they believe it, they can be saved. Truthfully, it’s often easier for a child or mentally delayed person to accept Christ because they are more simple.  Jesus said,

“Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 18:3

Thank you but what about infants? or people in a vegetative state? Those who can not even understand the story or Christ? I know God is merciful and I would think he would not hold these people as accountable as someone who can understand?

Another good question! Infants are innocent before God. This is why Jesus said “of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14). So if they die as infants, they go straight to heaven. Concerning those in a vegetative state, they may have heard the gospel before or like those who are mentally delayed, can understand the gospel even if its like that of a child. God understands everyone’s ability to comprehend and that’s why He made the gospel so simple.
