Hello Rev,
I recently made a statement in the heat of an argument and I have felt bad every since that time. I have always believed that people should not use the words “God” and “damn” in the same sentence (although technically I guess I just did again, but I didn’t know how else to ask). I have avoided doing that up until the other night when I was arguing with someone and let it slip. I am not saved as of yet, but plan to be in the future. I want to know if saying that is a sin that can be forgiven like all other sins?
Using the name of God in vain is a sin that God spoke specifically about. God said, ”You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” – Deuteronomy 5:11. To use God’s name in vain is a direct violation of the Ten Commandments. Therefore it is a serious issue that everyone needs to repent of. It also reveals the fact that we have a sinful nature. Using God’s name in vain can be forgiven like other sins, but we have to deal with the root of the problem. The problem is our sinful nature. When you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, He forgives all your sins and gives you a new nature. The Bible says, “If anyone is in Christ they are a new creation. Old things pass away and all things become new” – II Corinthians 5:17. The “old things” are like swearing and taking God’s name in vain.
I am deeply concerned that you are putting off being saved. What are you waiting for? Nothing in this life is more important than giving your life to Christ. Jesus said, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” – Mark 8:36. Also, what makes you think you will have another day? I pray you will take this matter of salvation very seriously. The Bible says, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” – II Corinthians 6:2. Please don’t keep putting off your decision.
