Dear Rev. Can you explain the creation of the two “lights” from Genesis on the first day and on the fourth?
The first day: Genesis 1:3 – “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4-And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5-And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”
The fourth day: Genesis 1:14 – “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. 15-And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16-And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17-And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18-And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good”
The “light” on the first day was the sun. On the fourth day the moon and stars were created. This is evident from the words “let them be for signs”. The moon gives light during the night hence the words in verse 15. Verses 16 to 18 are a summary. The creation of the sun and moon are mentioned again since they comprise the total light system God put in place. Repeating events that have already happened is common in the book of Genesis such as in the 2nd chapter where the creation of man is mentioned again (2:7). The creation of male and female is given on the 6th day of creation (1:26-27) and then the details in chapter 2:21-24 and again in chapter 5:1-2. Hope this helps.
