How do you know when someone is really speaking in tongues? I am a new Christian and want to learn all I can about Jesus and be Christ like. My friend at church says he can speak in tongues. Is it God’s will for a person to speak in tongues? Please explain this to me.
According to the Bible, speaking in tongues is the evidence that you have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. A simple reading of the book of Acts reveals this. Since you have already received the gift of salvation, God has another gift for you. Jesus said, “If you then, being evil (by nature), know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” – Luke 11:13. In Acts 10:45-46 we read, “And those of the circumcision (Jews) who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a wonderful gift from God. It will not only help you to live the Christian life, but also to serve Jesus in a powerful way. Jesus is the baptizer in the Holy Spirit so you’ll have to get it from Him. Just ask Him in the same way you did for salvation; by faith. I would also suggest reading the book of Acts to learn more about the Holy Spirit.
