The Bible says that there is only one God. How then can Jesus also be God? (Heb 1:8, Romans 9:5, II Peter 1:1, John 1:1, John 10:28, Titus 2:13, Zech. 12:10, etc.). Is there any way to explain this that isn’t so difficult to grasp? Thanks.
The problem we have in understanding this has to do with our concept of “one”. We think of one as a number whereas God thinks in terms of unity. For example in marriage God said “they two shall become one flesh”. We may have difficulty understanding this, but God sees marriage in this way. The same is true of the unity between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are three in perfect unity. Here’s another way of understanding it. Water comes in three forms; ice, steam and liquid. They are the same, yet different. It would be a lot easier to understand God as one instead of three in one, but this isn’t how God has revealed Himself. In creation, God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness” – Genesis 1:26. Hope this helps.
