Hello Reverend. I have a question about Hebrews 6:4-6. I got saved and for two years I served my Lord and then I backslid until the continual conviction of the Holy Spirit was more than I could take and brought me back to the Lord. Is this scripture saying that I can’t be forgiven of my sins anymore? Thank you for helping.
Hebrews 6:4-6 reads, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.” This passage of scripture refers to those who fall back into a sinful lifestyle and choose to continue to live that way. They have no desire to return to the Lord because they love their sinful lifestyle. Therefore it’s impossible to renew them again to repentance because they don’t want to be. Salvation is all about being forgiven for our sins, so to return to a sinful lifestyle would be wrong. Concerning Jesus, the Bible says, “who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age”– Galatians 1:4. The “heavenly gift” in Hebrews 6 refers to salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9), and so if you have been saved and experienced the blessing of the Holy Spirit and choose to return to a life of sin, there isn’t any other sacrifice for sin left. It’s like saying “I’ll continue sinning and crucify Jesus all over again”. Of course, this is terribly wrong and such a person won’t go to heaven. This however is not your case. You responded to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and returned to the Lord. I expect you repented to the Lord for your backsliding and if so, the Lord forgave you. So in answer to your question, yes, you can be forgiven of your sins even if you have backslidden. The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” – I John 1:9. Jesus also said, “the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” – John 6:37. So be at peace my brother and serve the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. God bless you!
