Is Taking Narcotics a Sin?

Do you believe that taking prescribed pain medication (narcotics) is a sin, and why?

There are various definitions given for the word “narcotic”. Some understand narcotics to refer to any illegal substance while others such as doctors refer to them in the medicinal sense as opium, opium derivatives or their synthetic substitutes. As to whether taking them is a sin or not. The Bible says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body” – I Corinthians 6:19-20. If a person is taking narcotics for the purpose of getting high, it’s a sin because this isn’t what God wants and it also harms the body. However, if a person is taking prescribed narcotics for the purpose of pain relief, it isn’t a sin. When a medical specialist prescribes an opiate, it’s given in doses according to the level of pain experienced by the patient and God isn’t against pain relief.
